Passepartout on the final stretch
For over 12 months now, Prewise has been a participant in the major international Passepartout development project. The project is approaching the integration phase, when the results of the various teams in the different countries are compiled into functioning demonstrators. The products of the Prewise team will next be presented to the other teams in a project review meeting to be held in Vigo, Spain on 21 – 24 November.
The Prewise Passepartout team has developed a BD-J (Blu-Ray Java) application platform which is capable of displaying and selecting adaptive content from various information sources, such as the Internet, digital television, etc., in accordance with the user’s preferences. The application works in the Philips Blu-Ray prototype equipment. Extensive resources and countless man hours have been spent in recent months in studying the operation of the BD-J platform and the prototype equipment.
- I am quite certain that the work has been worthwhile, because I believe that the BD-J application is a very good spark to continue along the same road of development with Symbian OS, which allows us to introduce the mobile dimension to the project, says Juhani Mäkelä, Prewise’s Technology Director.
- In addition to the BD-J platform, we have been developing an e-learning application designed for business use. The application combines elements of adaptive content management to the Prewise Gimlet LMS system, Mr Mäkelä tells us. This adds innovative metadata management and its application to SCORM-compatible data objects. The aim is to extend the scope of traditional LMS thinking, so that the system allows the storing and processing of metadata, subsequently providing the user with relevant content from various channels to support the learning process.
In Finland, Prewise receive funding support for the development project from TEKES (Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation). Passepartout will be completed in spring 2007. Project results will be recounted in next spring’s Newsletters.
