No, the heading does not refer to the third, nor the fourth, generation cell or mobile phones, nor does it refer to their service breaks. After all, they do usually function nearly flawlessly – if only we knew how to use them!
I am referring to the old children’s game, in which a message is sent from one end of a line to the other by way of whispering it to the next person who, in turn, whispers it forward exactly as she or he has heard it. The last person in the line, who has to utter the message out loud, usually ends up being the subject of some mirth, since the message is so distorted from the one originated at the opposite end. More often than not, however, the message does indeed carry through from one end of the line to the other.
An effect similar to that of the broken telephone can often be observed in relation to changes in business operations and the deployment of new products. It is a great challenge to transmit a uniform message to everybody, moreover a message free from the attitudes of the messenger. The ever increasing demand for international operations makes this issue even more topical. Different cultures, objectives, situations, and motives originated in organizations often stand in the way of a common message and common understanding.
A digital operational environment enables simultaneous and interactive communications and training that are identical for everyone. We simply need to ensure, efficiently and carefully, that everyone has a chance to see and study the message. And most importantly, we need to measure how the message is carried across. Regardless of whether the subject is e-learning or eletronic communications, its potential in facilitating international deployment and product training is significant.
It helps to get rid of broken telephones.
